Passage One

Feel tired lately? Has a doctor said he can’t find anything wrong with you? Perhaps he sent you to a hospital, but all the advanced equipment there shows that there is nothing wrong with you.

Then, consider this: you might be in a state of subhealth.

Subhealth, also called the third state or the gray state, is explained as a borderline state between health and disease.

According to the investigation by the National health Organization, over 45 percent of subhealth people are middle-aged or elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who work in management positions as well as students around exam-weeks.

Symptoms include a lack of energy, depression , slow reactions, insomnia (失眠), agitation, and poor memory. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating and aching in the waist and legs.

The key to preventing and recovering from subhealth, according to some medical experts, is activities.

As for meals, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar. They should also eat more fresh vegetables, fruits, fish because they are rich in nutritional elements—vitamins and trace elements that are important to the body.

Nutrition experts point out that it is not good to eat too much at one meal because it may cause unhealthy changes in the digestive tract (消化系统). They also say that a balanced diet is very helpful in avoiding subhealth.

16. According to this passage, which of the following is right?

ALBANY, New York—After 18 years of being vetoed by Democratic governors, a death penalty law signed by George Pataki, the stated Republican governor, took effect Friday. New York is the 38th state to enact a death penalty since 1976, when the U. S. Supreme Court allowed states to resume capital punishment.

“People out there understand that this is going to save lives,” Mr. Pataki said. He spoke at a news conference, surrounded by relatives of people killed in crimes that now qualify as capital cases.

Among the murders now punishable by death are those of police officers, prison guards and judges, serial killings, those committed with another felony (重罪) such as rape, and slayings by terrorists. The killers would be executed by injection.

A coalition has been preparing an appeal since the bill was approved. It will be filed as soon as someone is sentenced to death? said Norman Siegel, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union. No one has been executed in New York since 1963. In 1965, the legislature suspended the death penalty due to doubts about its fair application to minorities.

Passage Three

Tibetan architecture has been influenced by Chinese culture as well as Indian culture, and reflects a deeply Buddhist approach. The Buddhist wheel, along with two dragons, can be seen on nearly every Buddhist temple whose designs and inside details are different in Tibet. The design of the Tibetan towers can be different, from roundish walls in the western areas of Tibet to squarish, four-sided walls in Ladakh, an area near Himalayas which is known for its remote mountain beauty.

The most unusual feature of Tibetan architecture is that many of the houses and temples are built on elevated, sunny sites facing the south, and are often made out of a mixture of rocks, wood, cement and earth. Little fuel is available for heating or lighting, so flat roofs are built to keep heat inside, and multiple windows are built to let in sunlight. Walls are usually sloped inwards at 10 degrees as a measure to fight against frequent earthquakes in the mountainous area.

Standing at 117 meters in height and 360 meters in width, the Potala Palace, which means the holy land of Buddhism, is considered as the most important example of Tibetan architecture. Formerly the living place of the Dalai Lama, it contains over a thousand rooms within thirteen stories, and houses portraits of the past Dalai Lamas and statues of the Buddha. It is divided into the outer White Palace, which serves as the administrative quarters, and the inner Red Palace, which contains the assembly hall of the Lamas and a vast library of Buddhist scriptures (经文). It is now a state museum of China and a popular tourist attraction.

26. What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. Tibetan architecture. B. Tibetan temples.

C. Tibetan arts. D. Tibetan transportation.

27. The walls are usually sloped inwards at 10 degrees to .

A. bring in the fresh air

B. keep the cold wind out

C. prevent the damage of earthquakes

D. collect the rain in summer

Doctors believe that second-hand smoke may cause lung cancer in people who do not smoke. Non-smokers often breathe in the smoke from other people’s cigarettes. This is second-hand smoke. The U.S Environmental Protection Agency(美国环保局) reports that about fifty-three thousand people die in the United States each year as a result of exposure(暴露) to second-hand smoke.

It is harder for children to avoid second-hand smoke. In the United States, nine million children under the age of five live in homes with at least one smoker. Research shows that these children are sick more often than children who live in homes where no one smokes. The damaging effects of second-hand smoke on children also continue as they grow up. The children of smokers are more than twice as likely to develop lung cancer when they are adults as children of non-smokers. The risk is even higher for children who live in homes where both parents smoke.

People are becoming very aware of the danger of second –hand smoke. As a result, they have passed laws that prohibit people from smoking in many public places. Currently, 45states in the United States have laws that restrict, or limit, smoking. The most well-known law doesn’t allow people to smoke on short native airline flights, i.e. flights within the country.

1. Compared with non-smokers’ children, the children whose parents both smoke are likely to .

A) grow up more slowly C) develop lung cancer more often

B) be sick under to age of five D) become smokers more easily

2. Why are there laws made against smoking in public places in the U.S?

A) Because people have realized the danger of second-hand smoke.

B) Because more and more people don’t like smoking now.

C) Because parents don’t want their children to become smokers.

D) Because the government wants to limit the production of cigarettes.

3. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A) The number of smokers’ children is twice greater than that of non-smokers’ children.

B) People are now not allowed to smoke on airline flights in the U.S.

C) Adults whose parents smoked when they were children get cancer more frequently.

D) Second-hand smoke is not as dangerous as first-hand smoke

A) the main cause of lung cancer is second-hand smoke

B) most people know nothing about the danger of second-hand smoke

C) public places are dangerous for people to stay

D) children suffer most from second-hand smoke

5. This passage is mainly aboutA) how people get cancer

B) who can get cancer easily

C) what should be done with smoking in public

D) whether second-hand smoking can be harmful

Many visitors to the United States find that the fast pace at which people move is very troubling. One’s first impression is likely to be that everyone is in a rush. City people always seem to be hurrying to get where they are going. And they are very impatient if they are delayed even for a brief moment. At first this may seem unfriendly to you. But drivers will rush you; storekeepers will be in a hurry as they serve you; people will push past you as they walk along the street. You will miss smiles and brief conversations with people when you shop or dine in a restaurant. Do not think it is because Americans are in such a hurry that

they are unfriendly. Life is often much slower outside the big cities, which is true in other countries as well. American who live in cities such as New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles, often think that everyone is equally in a hurry to get things done. But when they discover that you are a stranger, most Americans become quite kindly and will take great care to help you.

6. Visitors to the United States possibly feel that city people of the country are very________.

A) busy C) troubling
