The Cock and the Jewel(公鸡和宝石)

A cock, scratching in the farmyard for food for the hens, turned up a precious stone that shone and sparked in the sun. "Well," said the Cock, "I don't know what you are doing here. You are a very beautiful thing, and no doubt if your owner found you he would be delighted, but you are no good to me. I would rather have one grain of delicious barley than all the precious stones under the sun!"

MORAL: Judge thins by their true value.

The Man Bitten by an Ant, and Hermes One day, a sailing ship sank to the bottom of the sea with all its passengers. A man who was a witness of the shipwreck claimed that the decrees of the gods were unjust, for to lose a single impious person they had also made the innocent perish. There were a great many ants on the spot where he was standing. As he was saying this, it happened that one of them bit him. In order to kill it, he crushed them all. Then Hermes appeared to him, and struck him with his wand[rhabdos], saying: \'And now do you not admit that the gods judge men in the same way you judge the ants?\' 被蚂蚁咬了的人和赫尔墨斯 某日,一只航船连同所有的乘客一起沉入了海底。

The Goat and the Goatherd One day, a goatherd was calling his goats back to their fold, but one of them loitered behind on some juicy pasture. The goatherd threw a stone at her, but he aimed so well that he broke a horn. Then he began to plead with the goat not to tell his master. But the goat replied: \'What\'s the use of keeping quiet about it? How can I hide it? It\'s there for all eyes to see, that my horn is broken.\' 山羊和牧人 某日,牧人吆喝着把羊群赶回羊栏,其中一只羊贪吃牧草,磨磨蹭蹭,远远地落在了后面.

The Cat and the Hens A cat, learning that there were some sick chickens in a a small farm, disguised himself as a doctor and, taking with him the tools of the trade, called on them. A man shot him with an arrow, which lodged in his flesh. The end of the arrow, feathered with eagle\'s feathers, stuck out of him and stared him in the face. Seeing it, he cried out : \'This is the crowning insult, to die because of the danger I myself presented!\' 中 箭 的 鹰 鹰高踞岩石顶上俯察地面,正打算去捕获一只兔子。

The Shipwrecked Man A rich Athenian was sailing with some other travellers. A violent tempest suddenly arose, and the boat capsized. Then, while the other passengers were trying to save themselves bymming, the Athenian continually invoked the aid of the goddess Athena [patroness of his city], and promised after offering after offering if only she would save him.

Shortly afterwards the Bat again fellon the ground, and was carght by another Weasel, whom helikewise entreated not to eat him. The Weasel said that hehad a special hostility to mice. The Bat assured him thathe was not a mouse, but a bat; and thus a second timeescaped. It is wise to turn circumstances to good account.

It happened shortly after this that the Lion was caught by some hunters, who bound him by strong

ropes to the ground. The Mouse, recognizing his roar, came up, and gnawed the rope with his teeth, and setting him free, exclaimed: "You ridiculed the idea of my ever being able to help you, not expecting to receive from me any repayment of your favour; but now you know that it is possible for even a Mouse to confer benefits on a Lion."

A lion, no longer able, from the weakness of old age, to hunt for his prey, laid himself up in his den, and, breathing with great difficulty, and speaking with a low voice, gave out that he was very ill indeed. The report soon spread among the beasts, and there was great lamentation for the sick lion. One after the other came to see him; but, catching him thus alone, and in his own den, the lion made an easy prey of them, and grew fat upon his diet.

The fox, suspecting the truth of the matter, came at length to make his visit of inquiry, and standing at some distance, asked his Majesty how he did? "Ah, my dearest friend," said the lion, "Is it you? Why do you stand so far from me? Come, sweet friend, and pour a word of consolation in the poor lion's ear, who has but a short time to live."

"Bless you!" said the fox, "but excuse me if I cannot stay; for, to tell the truth, I feel quite uneasy at the mark of the foot-steps that I see here, all printing towards your den, and none returning outwards."

Moral: Affairs are easier of entrance than of exit; and it is but common prudence to see our way out before we venture in.

He soon discovered the secret of the hidden treasure, and digging down, came to the lump of gold, and stole it. The Miser, on his next visit, found the hole empty and began to tear his hair and to make loud lamentations. A neighbor, seeing him overcome with grief and learning the cause, said, "Pray do not grieve so; but go and take a stone, and place it in the hole, and fancy that the gold is still lying there. It will do you 3

The terrible king was becoming angry. It was because he thought that he was the greatest in the whole world. Then the king was angry. "What! He is greater? Then I will defeat God."

In a loud voice, the terrible king said that he would win against God. That's why he ordered that a magnificent ship be built in order to go to the heaven. He said he would ride the ship to go and defeat God. The terrible king rode the ship up to heaven.

From the sky, an angel was sent. However, the terrible king shot over a thousand bullets at the angel. "Ahhhhhh" Being shot, the angel was bleeding. The blood dropped unto the terrible king's ship. The angel's blood was so heavy that the king's ship sank.

The terrible king became angry, again. "Build a more stronger ship." The terrible king wanted a better ship, so he ordered all the workers in his kingdom to build it. "I will defeat God for sure!"

The terrible king went up to heaven, once more. God sent mosquitoes to the terrible king. The terrible king just laughed at the mosquitoes. "Go and bring me the best carpet."

The king made another command. He thought that if he wrapped the carpet around his body the mossquitoes would not be able to bite him. But one mosquito went inside of the carpet. 3:Finding a New Spring

Once upon a time a certain tradesman was leading a caravan(大篷车) to another country to sell his goods. Along the way they came to the edge of a severe hot-sand desert. They asked about, and found that during the daytime the sun heats up the fine sand until it's as hot ascharcoal(木炭) , so no one can walk on it -- not even bullocks(小公牛,阉牛) or camels! So the caravan leader hired a desert guide, one who could follow the stars, so they could travel only at night when the sand cools down. They began the dangerous night-time journey across the desert. A couple nights later, after eating their evening meal, and waiting for the sand to cool, they started out again.

Later that night the desert guide, who was driving the first cart saw from the stars that they were getting close to the other side of the desert. He had also overeaten, so that when he relaxed, hedozed off(打瞌睡) to sleep. Then the bullocks who, of course, couldn't tell directions by reading the stars, gradually turned to the side and went in a big wide circle until they ended up at the same place they had started from! By then it was morning, and the people realized they were back at the same spot they'd camped at the day before. They lost heart and began to cry about their condition. Since the desert crossing was supposed to be over by now, they had no more water and were afraid they would die of thirst. They even began to blame the caravan leader and the desert guide -- "We can do nothing without water!", they complained.

Then the tradesman thought to himself, "If I lose courage now, in the middle of thisdisastrous situation, my leadership has no meaning. If I fall to weeping and regretting thismisfortune, and do nothing, all these goods and bullocks and even the lives of the people, including myself, may be lost. I must be energetic and face the situation!" So he began walking back and forth, trying to think out a plan to save them all. Remaining alert, out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a small clump of grass. He thought, "Without water, no plant could live in this desert." So he called over the most energetic of his fellow travelers and asked them to dig up the ground on that very spot. They dug and dug,and after a while they got down to a large stone. Seeing it they stopped, and began to blame the leader again, saying "This effort is useless. We're just wasting our time!" But the tradesman replied, "No no, my friends, if we give up the effort we will all be ruined and our poor animals will die -- let us be encouraged!" As he said this, he got down into the hole, put his ear to the stone, and heard the sound of flowing water.

Immediately, he called over a boy who had been digging and said, "If you give up, we will allperish -- so take this heavy hammer and strike the rock." The boy lifted the hammer over his head and hit the rock as hard as he could -- and he himself was the most surprised when the rock spilt in two and a mighty flow of water gushed(涌出,迸发) out from under it! Suddenly, all the people were overjoyed. They drank and bathed and washed the animals and cooked their food and ate. Before they left, they raised a high banner so that other travelers could see it from afar(遥远地) and come to the new spring in the middle of the hot-sand desert. Then they continued on safely to the end of their journey. The moral is. Don't give up too easily keep on trying until you reach the goal.
