  在英语中通常用下列方式表示的词:在形容词或副词前加more(如 more natural,more clearly )或加后缀 -er(newer,sooner )。典型的是指形容词或副词所表示的质、量或关系的增加。英语句子中,将比较两个主体的方法叫做“比较句型”。其中,像“A比B更……”的表达方式称为比较级;而“A最……”的表达方式则称为最高级。组成句子的方式是将形容词或副词变化成比较级或最高级的形态。

  一、形容词、副词的比较级和最高级的构成规则

  1.一般单音节词和少数以-er,-ow结尾的双音节词,比较级在后面加-er,最高级在后面加-est;

  (1)单音节词

  如:

  tall→taller→tallest

  great→greater→greatest

  small→smaller→smallest

  short→shorter→shortest

  (2)双音节词

  如:clever→cleverer→cleverest

  2.以不发音e结尾的单音节词,比较在原级后加-r,最高级在原级后加-st;

  3.在重读闭音节(即:辅音+元音+辅音)中,先双写末尾的辅音字母,比较级加-er,最高级加-est;

  4.以“辅音字母+y”结尾的双音节词, 把y改为i,比较级加-er,最高级加-est;

  如:easy→easier→easiest heavy→heavier→heaviest

  5.其他双音节词和多音节词,比较级在前面加more,最高级在前面加most;

  如:beautiful→more beautiful→most beautiful

  注意:(1)形容词最高级前通常必须用定冠词 the,副词最高级前可不用。

  例句: The Sahara is the biggest desert in the world.

  (2) 形容词most前面没有the,不表示最高级的含义,只表示"非常"。

  6.有少数形容词、副词的比较级和最高级是不规则的,必须熟记。

1.两者相比(甲=乙),用“as+原级+as”表示

3.两者相比(甲〉乙),用“比较级+than”表示

4比较级前一般不用冠词,但若表示“两者中较„„时”,比较级前要加定冠词。 若比较级后有名词,常在比较级前加不定冠词,表示泛指。

9.比较级 + and + 比较级”或“more and more +原级”表示“越来越„„”

10.the +比较级„„, the+比较级”-----. 表示“越„„越„„”

这一句型表示前者和后者在程度上同样增加或减小,越---越---;

这一句型的前半句是从句,后半句是主句,比较级可以是adj,也可是adv.

主句是将来时,从句要用一般现在时代替一般将来时。

1. any other + 单数名词

all the other + 复数名词

not / never ----- + a/ an + 比较级+单数名词 常在比较级前加不定冠词,表示泛指。 Nothing is so easy as this. =Nothing is easier than this. =This is the easiest thing.

It is not a better idea.这是再好不过的一个办法了。

I have never heard such an interesting story.我从没听过比这更有趣的故了。

No other book has a greater effect on my life.没有哪一本书比这本书对我的影响更大的了。 =This book has the greatest effect on my life.

3.would rather„than”, “prefer„to„”, “prefer to do„rather than„”这三个句型表示“宁愿„而不愿„;喜欢„胜过„;宁愿做„而不愿做„”含义。虽无比较级形式,但表示比较级含义。

He would rather die than give in.他宁死不屈。

He preferred to go out rather than stay home.他宁愿出去也不愿呆在家里。

4.形容词+to”结构也可表示比较含义

This kind of car is superior in quality to that.这种汽车的质量比那一种好得多

Li ping is three years senior to Liu Gang.李平比刘刚大三岁。

三者或三者以上相比,表示最高级时,用“the +最高级”的结构表示,这种句式一般常有表示比较范围的介词短语。

Zhang Hua is the tallest of the three.

He works (the) hardest in his class.

That was the least exciting football game I’ve ever watched.

This hotel is the most comfortable I’ve ever stayed.

注意:当最高级的前面无限定词the或有不定冠词a/an时,仅表示“很„„,非常„„” Monday is my busiest day. 星期一是我很忙的一天。

最高级的特殊用法

1> "„ + be + one of the +最高级 +复数名词", 表示"最„„的„„之一"。

The Yellow River is one of the longest rivers in China. 黄河是中国最长的河流之一。

2> "„+ be +the + 序数词 +最高级 +单数名词 + 范围", 表示"„„是„„.的第几„"。 She is the second tallest student in our class. 她是我们班第二高的学生。

3> "„ + be + the 最高级 ~ that 某人 have/ has ever + 过去分词".

This is the most interesting book that I have ever read.这是我看过的最有趣的书。

2.运用范围

(1)比较级是指在两者间进行比较,且必须在同类事物之间,一般有连词than。 Dave is funnier than Paul.

These books are more useful than those.

The weather today is even worse than that yesterday.

这个故事比那个有趣。

This story is more interesting than that one.

(2) 两者相比(甲=乙)用“as +形容词或副词原级+as”表示, 意为“和…一样”。 She could do as well as a man.

Tom is as tall as Jack.

这只手表和那只一样便宜。

This watch is as cheap as that one.

(3)两者相比(甲<乙)用“not as/so +形容词或副词原级 + as”,意为“不如…一样”。 Mike isn’t as/so tall as Jim.

He didn’t come as/so early as Tom.

The weather today is not as/so warm as it yesterday.

(4)“…times as +形容词或副词原级 +as ”

“是…的几倍”

My ruler is three times as long as yours.

This kind of plane flies twice as fast as that kind.

我们班学生比你们班多两倍。

The students in our class are twice as many as yours.

(5) 也可以用“倍数+ 比较级 + than…”表示“是……的几倍”

My ruler is three times longer than yours.

This kind of plane flies twice faster than that kind.

我们的教室比你们的教室大三倍。

Our classroom is three times larger than yours.

(6)用“比较级+ and + 比较级”来表示

“越来越…”

Our country is becoming more and more beautiful.

The people are becoming richer and richer.

(7) “the + 比较级…the +比较级…”表示

“越…,越…”

The more you study, the more you know.

The more people you know, the less time you have to see them.

The harder you work, the better result you’ll get.

3.修饰语

比较级可不带修饰语,若表示程度或差别大小时,用much, a little, even, far, a lot, a bit, no, still或数词修饰。但若用“of the two”时,比较级前面必须带“the”.

It was far more interesting than I expected.

She is the nicer one of the two.

1. 表示“比...更”,用比较级形容词+than+比较成分,表示前者“超过”后者。than后主语

的述语动词往往省略,非正式用法的than后的人称代名词可用宾格。

I am a better swimmer than you (are).

我游泳比你好。

But you are taller and stronger than I (am).

但是你比我高,比我壮。

2. 否定的比较级表示“较...低;不及...”,用less+原级形容词+than+比较成分,表示前者不及后者。
