The game began. To our great surprise, they did much better than ours. Everyone on their team did the best. At last, we lost the match and we all felt sad.

After the match, we thought a lot. We certainly learned that even though a team is very good, there is usually another team better than yours. You can’t be always the best. And the most important lesson we learned was: One can’t judge a person only by his clothes.

Fire can help people in many ways. But it can also be very harmful. Fire can heat water, warm your houses, give light, and cook food. But fire can burn things too. It can burn trees, houses, animals, or people. Sometimes big fires can burn forests.

Nobody knows for sure how people began to use fire. But there are many interesting, old stories

about the first time a man or woman started a fire. One story from Australia tells about a man who went up to the sun by a rope and brought fire down a very, very long time ago.

Today people know how to make a fire with matches. Children sometimes like to play with them. A small fire can become a big fire very fast.

Fires kill many people every year. So you must be careful with matches. You should also learn to put out fires. Fires need oxygen. Without oxygen they die. There is oxygen in the air. Cover a fire with water, sand or something else. This keeps the air from a fire and kills it.

Be careful with fire, and it will help you. Be careless with fire, and it will burn you.

These days, many food scandals(丑闻) are making many people worried before they put their chopsticks into their mouth. They are wondering if the food they are eating is clean, healthy or bad for their health.

It’s certain that most food we eat today is added some chemicals(化学物质) to make them look better, taste better and last longer. The chemicals are supposed to be harmless(无害的) and there are laws that regulate(管理) which chemicals can and cannot be used. Unfortunately, some producers do not obey the laws.

Last month, a little girl died after eating some fried chicken. His father bought the chicken for her from a street seller in Fenzhuang Village, Fengtai, Beijing. After testing the girl, the doctor said she died because of a kind of chemical. Another piece of news from Zhejiang TV Station also said that a producer of steamed buns(馒头) added some chemicals to make the buns look nicer. He also took old buns and used them to make new buns. Most of the buns were sold to schools and eaten by students, like you!

After hearing about these accidents, you must feel more worried about the food safety because there have been more and more food safety problems in our country, for example, poisonous(有毒的) rice, milk, oil and so on. People feel quite afraid because these foods are rather bad for their health and even kill them. But why did these producers do such things? The answer is simple: they wanted to make more money. So it’s the right time for our government to take some actions to stop such poisonous foods appearing again in order to make sure that people can have safe and healthy foods and drinks.

59.The little girl ate ___________ before she died.

Subject: The first week on Mars

Date Sent: May 1, 2158

Hello, everyone on Earth!

I’m Amanda Corbett. I’ve been in the spacecraft with my parents for a week. I will send an e-mail once a week to tell you about what life is like here.

It’s been fun learning how to live in a weightless environment. There is no gravity here. Anything could float away outside of the spacecraft, so I have to stay in it all day along. I’ve sent a photo of what I see from my spacecraft window. That’s what Earth looks from about 300 miles above. Sometimes I can parts of Earth: Deserts are yellow and rainforests are green. I can also see the effects of pollutions. What I see depends on the time of the day, where we are, and the weather. I spend a lot of time looking out of my window. I’m a little lonely in space!

I still go to school. I have a computer with me. It lets me see, hear and talk to my teachers and classmates on Earth. When I finish my work or a test, I simply click on an icon to send it to my teacher. In fact, I’m using it now. It’s nice to see my friends, but we don’t have time to talk during class. I wish I had someone to talk to. Sometimes I get really bored. I hope to get some excitement soon.

Yours floating friend,

Amanda

Each spring brings a new blossom(花) of wildflowers in the ditches(沟) along the highway I travel daily to work.

There is one particular blue flower that has always caught my eye. I’ve noticed that it blooms only in the morning hours, the afternoon sun is too warm for it. Every day for about two weeks, I see those beautiful flowers.

This spring, I started a wildflower garden in our yard. I can look out of the kitchen window while doing the dishes and see the flowers. I’ve often thought that those lovely blue flowers from the ditch would look great alongside other wildflowers.

Every day I drove past the flowers thinking, “I’ll stop on my way home and dig them.” “I don’t want to get my good clothes dirty...” Whatever the reason was, I never stopped to dig them. My husband even gave me a folding shovel(铲子) one year for my trunk(行李箱) to be used for that expressed purpose.

One day on my way home from work, I was saddened to see that the highway department had mowed(割) the ditches and the pretty blue flowers were gone. I thought to myself, “Way to go, you waited when you first saw them blooming this spring.”

A week ago we were shocked and saddened to learn that my oldest sister-in-law has a terminal brain tumor(脑瘤). She is 20 years older than my husband and unfortunately, because of age and distance, we haven’t been as close as we all would have liked. I couldn’t help but see the connection between the pretty blue flowers and the relationship between my husband’s sister and us. I do believe that God has given us some time left to plant some wonderful memories that will bloom every year for us.

And yes, if I see the blue flowers again, you can bet I’ll stop and transplant them to my wildflower garden.

67.Where could the writer see the blue windflowers in the spring?

A.In her garden. B.In her yard.

C.In the fields on her way to work. D.On the highway.

68.Why did her husband gave her a floding shovel one year? Because ___________.

A.it’s a gift for her B.it’s a necessary tool for her trunk

69.The underlined word “it” probably means ___________.

A.appreciating the beautiful flowers B.stopping people mowing the flowers

“I am a clean, non-smoking, and considerate (善解人意的) American man looking for a homestay in the Wudaokou area to improve my Chinese language skills,” he wrote. “I am willing to offer help with English tutoring and even can help you with applying to foreign universities.”

He still hasn’t found a suitable home.

“Most of the families that contacted (联系) me seem to be interested in doing business instead of cultural exchange,” he said. “I think I might have to rent an apartment in the end.”

Kohl isn’t the only foreigner finding it difficult to find a home stay in Beijing. Michael Benson, who wants to come to Beijing in September, has also faced problems.

Why is finding a home stay family so difficult? Beijing Today consulted (请教) a Chinese teacher, Jessie Xi, who has been teaching foreign students at the University of International Business and Economics for more than six years.

Xi has accepted many home stays, and from her own experience and what she’s been told, she said there were four major problems visitors may meet when applying for home stays.
